Arsenal are reportedly reviewing their defensive options in the transfer market after William Saliba was ruled out for an extended period with a back injury, raising concerns over the club’s defensive depth ahead of the new Premier League season.

According to reports, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is considering a move for one of two experienced Premier League defenders, with Manchester City’s John Stones and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa emerging among the names linked with a potential switch to the Emirates.
The situation follows confirmation from Arsenal that Saliba will require a period of rehabilitation after specialist assessments of the injury he sustained during France’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Saliba was forced off during France’s semi-final defeat to Spain after around 30 minutes. Arsenal subsequently confirmed that the 25-year-old would not undergo surgery but would instead begin a managed rehabilitation programme. The club did not provide a specific timeframe for his return, stating only that he would be unavailable for an extended period.
The development has reportedly prompted Arteta and Arsenal’s recruitment team to reassess their plans for the summer transfer window. The Gunners had already been linked with defensive reinforcements, but Saliba’s absence could now increase the urgency of bringing in another centre-back.
Stones, 32, is understood to be one of the options being considered. The England international has extensive Premier League and Champions League experience and has previously worked with Arteta during the Arsenal manager’s time on Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City.
Konsa, meanwhile, has established himself as a dependable defender at Aston Villa and has also represented England at international level. His ability to operate at centre-back and provide defensive versatility is reportedly attractive to Arsenal as they prepare for another demanding campaign.
However, there is no indication that Arsenal have completed a deal for either player, and the extent of the club’s interest remains subject to developments in the transfer market.
Saliba’s injury presents a significant challenge for Arteta, particularly with Arsenal preparing to defend their Premier League title and compete in European football. The club’s opening league fixture is scheduled for August 21 against newly promoted Coventry City, leaving the management team with a limited window to assess the squad’s options before competitive action begins.
The Gunners will therefore have to balance the need for immediate defensive cover with their broader transfer strategy. Whether Arsenal pursue Stones, Konsa, another established centre-back or decide to rely on their existing defensive resources is expected to become clearer as the transfer window progresses.
For now, Saliba’s prolonged absence has added a new dimension to Arsenal’s summer planning and could force Arteta to accelerate the search for defensive reinforcements.
