Boko Haram Assault on Borno Military Base Leaves Brig. General, Soldiers Dead

Posted on April 9, 2026April 9, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Boko Haram Assault on Borno Military Base Leaves Brig. General, Soldiers Dead

Suspected fighters of Boko Haram have launched a fresh attack on a military formation in Borno State, resulting in the death of a commanding officer, several soldiers, and a brigade Islamic cleric, according to emerging security reports.

Details from local and security sources indicate that the insurgents stormed the base in a coordinated assault, targeting troops stationed in the area. The attack reportedly led to the killing of a senior officer believed to be the commanding officer of the unit, alongside a number of military personnel. A brigade imam attached to the formation was also said to have been killed during the incident.

While the exact casualty figures remain unclear, the assault is part of a broader resurgence of attacks on military installations across Nigeria’s North-East. Recent weeks have seen intensified strikes by insurgent groups on army positions in Borno, often involving heavy weapons and coordinated ground offensives.

The Nigerian military has yet to release a comprehensive official statement confirming the full extent of casualties from this latest attack. However, in similar recent incidents, authorities have cautioned against circulating unverified figures, noting that some reports tend to exaggerate losses or misrepresent battlefield outcomes.

Borno State remains the epicentre of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency, where Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), frequently target both security forces and civilians. The conflict, which began over a decade ago, has led to tens of thousands of deaths and widespread displacement across the Lake Chad region.

Security analysts say the continued targeting of military bases suggests a strategic attempt by insurgents to weaken frontline defenses and seize weapons, even as the Nigerian armed forces intensify counter-insurgency operations in the region.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain official confirmation and further operational details from military authorities were ongoing.
