Lagos Launches Biodigester Plant at Ikosi Fruit Market to Produce Energy, Fertilizer

Posted on February 10, 2026February 10, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Lagos Launches Biodigester Plant at Ikosi Fruit Market to Produce Energy, Fertilizer

Lagos State Government has inaugurated a biodigester plant at the Ikosi Fruit Market, Lagos, in a major step toward converting organic market waste into clean energy and organic fertilizer. The initiative is part of the state’s broader waste-to-wealth and environmental sustainability drive aimed at reducing landfill pressure while promoting renewable energy solutions.

The biodigester facility was unveiled by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed that the project aligns with the state’s commitment to climate action, waste reduction, and the adoption of circular economy practices. According to him, organic waste should no longer be seen as a burden but as a valuable resource that can be harnessed productively.

Situated within the busy Ikosi Fruit Market, the plant is designed to process large volumes of organic waste generated daily by traders, including fruit peels, spoiled produce, and vegetable remnants. These materials, which previously contributed to environmental pollution and blocked drainage systems, will now be collected and treated directly within the market.

Through an anaerobic digestion process, the organic waste is broken down in an oxygen-free environment to produce biogas and digestate. The biogas can be used as a clean energy source for cooking or electricity generation, while the digestate is converted into nutrient-rich organic fertilizer suitable for agricultural use.

Commissioner Wahab explained that the project was delivered through strategic collaboration with development partners, including C40 Cities, under international climate action support programmes. He noted that Lagos is demonstrating how sub-national governments can translate climate commitments into practical, community-level solutions.

He further stated that the biodigester plant would significantly reduce methane emissions associated with decomposing organic waste, improve sanitation within the market, and lower the amount of refuse transported to landfills across the state. This, he said, would have long-term environmental and economic benefits for Lagos residents.

Environmental experts have long identified organic waste as a major component of Lagos’ waste stream, accounting for a significant percentage of daily refuse generated in the state. By treating organic waste at the source, the Ikosi project is expected to improve waste management efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Market leaders and traders welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the facility would improve hygiene, reduce foul odors, and create a healthier trading environment. They also noted the potential economic value of the fertilizer produced, which could support local farming activities.

The Ikosi biodigester project is being positioned as a pilot model that can be replicated in other major markets and communities across Lagos. State officials believe that scaling such projects will strengthen the state’s resilience to climate change while boosting renewable energy adoption.

With the launch of the biodigester plant, Lagos State has reinforced its status as a front-runner in innovative waste management and climate-responsive urban governance, setting a practical example for other Nigerian states seeking sustainable solutions to growing environmental challenges.
