The conflict between the United States and Iran has entered a dangerous new phase after American forces carried out a fresh wave of military strikes against Iranian targets, prompting Tehran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks aimed at U.S. military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain.
According to U.S. officials, the latest strikes targeted dozens of Iranian military sites, including missile launch facilities, air defence systems and logistics infrastructure. Washington said the operation was launched in response to recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route for oil exports.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) subsequently announced that it had launched retaliatory attacks against American military positions in Kuwait and Bahrain, arguing that the action was a direct response to what it described as U.S. aggression and violations of previous understandings between the two countries.
Authorities in both Kuwait and Bahrain activated air defence systems as missiles and drones approached their territories. Initial reports indicated that several incoming projectiles were intercepted, while officials said assessments were ongoing to determine the extent of any damage or casualties.
The renewed exchange of hostilities comes after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the interim ceasefire reached earlier between Washington and Tehran had effectively collapsed. He warned that the United States was prepared to launch additional military operations if Iran continued attacks on shipping or American interests in the region, while also leaving the door open for future diplomatic engagement.
The escalation has heightened fears of a broader regional conflict involving Gulf states that host American military bases. It has also raised concerns among international observers over the security of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s crude oil supply passes. Financial markets reacted swiftly, with global oil prices climbing amid worries about potential disruptions to energy supplies.
Diplomatic efforts are continuing behind the scenes, but analysts warn that the latest military exchanges have significantly undermined prospects for a lasting peace agreement. Regional governments have also stepped up security measures as they monitor the rapidly evolving situation.
