The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has officially announced the approved fares for the 2026 Hajj exercise, bringing clarity and relief to thousands of intending Muslim pilgrims across the country. The latest fare adjustment reflects government intervention to ease the financial burden on pilgrims amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the economy and strengthen the naira.
According to the commission, intending pilgrims from the Borno–Adamawa Zone are expected to pay ₦7,579,020.96, those from the Northern Zone will pay ₦7,696,769.76, while pilgrims from the Southern Zone will pay ₦7,991,141.76. The differential in fare, NAHCON explained, is influenced by varying flight distances, logistical expenses, and accommodation costs across the three zones.
NAHCON’s announcement comes on the heels of a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, urging the commission to review and reduce the 2026 Hajj fares in line with the improved value of the naira. The presidency had earlier expressed concern about the affordability of the pilgrimage, given the impact of currency fluctuations on earlier cost projections.
In a statement released on Sunday, NAHCON expressed gratitude to the Tinubu-led administration for its timely intervention, describing it as a major relief for Nigerian pilgrims. The commission noted that the fare reduction demonstrates the government’s responsiveness to the needs of its citizens and its commitment to supporting religious obligations within reasonable financial limits.
The agency further explained that the review became possible following the recent appreciation of the naira and a more stable foreign exchange market, which significantly reduced the dollar equivalent of pilgrimage-related expenses. It added that proactive negotiations with service providers in Saudi Arabia and local travel agencies also contributed to the downward review.
Intending pilgrims are advised to complete their registration and payment early to take advantage of the new rates. NAHCON emphasized that early remittance of funds will help maintain the current favorable exchange rate and prevent any future fare increase that could arise from market fluctuations or logistic changes.
The commission also urged state Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards and licensed travel agencies to strictly adhere to the approved fares, warning against any unauthorized additional charges. NAHCON stated that it will closely monitor compliance across all states to ensure fairness, transparency, and uniformity in fare implementation.
For the 2026 Hajj, NAHCON has also assured pilgrims of improved welfare, accommodation, and transportation arrangements, both in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. The commission reiterated its resolve to maintain international standards and provide seamless services to all intending pilgrims throughout the exercise.
This development has been widely applauded by Muslim leaders and stakeholders across Nigeria, who praised the federal government for responding to the plight of intending pilgrims. Many described the fare reduction as a sign of hope and a testament to the administration’s sensitivity to the economic realities faced by ordinary citizens.
With the new 2026 Hajj fare now officially released, intending pilgrims are expected to begin preparations in earnest, as registration opens across various state boards. The announcement marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s Hajj planning calendar, setting the tone for a more affordable and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience for thousands of Muslim faithful.
