Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised four Boko Haram terrorists and rescued three kidnapped victims during a successful counter-insurgency operation in Borno State, reinforcing ongoing efforts to curb insecurity in Nigeria’s North-East.
According to reports, the operation took place in Askira Uba Local Government Area, a region that has remained vulnerable to repeated attacks by insurgent groups. The troops reportedly engaged the terrorists during an attempted assault, successfully repelling the attack and preventing further harm to civilians.
Military sources disclosed that the encounter led to the killing of four insurgents, while several others fled with possible gunshot wounds. The troops also recovered weapons and other items from the scene, further weakening the operational capacity of the attackers.
In the course of the operation, three individuals who had been abducted by the terrorists were rescued. The victims were reportedly freed unharmed and are currently receiving necessary care and support following their ordeal.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups operating in the region, noting that such offensives are part of broader efforts under ongoing military campaigns targeting insurgent strongholds across the North-East.
Borno State has long been the epicentre of the Boko Haram insurgency, a conflict that began in 2009 and has since caused widespread displacement, loss of lives, and destruction of communities.
Despite sustained military operations, remnants of Boko Haram and its splinter factions, including the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), continue to launch sporadic attacks, particularly in remote and rural areas where security presence is limited.
Recent weeks have seen intensified military activity in the region, with troops conducting clearance operations, repelling attacks, and rescuing abducted civilians as part of efforts to stabilise affected communities and restore normalcy.
Security analysts note that while such tactical victories are significant, the broader challenge remains ensuring lasting peace through improved intelligence, sustained military pressure, and coordinated humanitarian interventions.
The latest operation in Askira Uba underscores both the persistent threat posed by insurgents and the ongoing resolve of Nigerian forces to confront and dismantle terrorist networks across the region.
