…Sign of a politically drowning man clutching at straws for survival.
The Kwara State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it is aware of a covert plan allegedly orchestrated by the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to resurrect discredited allegations linking the party’s leader, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, to the tragic Offa robbery incident of 2018.
In a press statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Olusegun Olusola Adewara and sent to Rextun City Updates News desk, the party claimed Credible information available to the party indicates that, following the massive turnout at the PDP rally held in Ilorin last weekend, where thousands of residents openly rejected the current administration, the governor has directed state lawyers to urgently file fresh criminal charges against Dr. Saraki in connection with the Offa case.
According to the statement, “We are aware that this is not the first attempt to revisit the matter. The governor had previously considered reopening the case but was advised against it due to its lack of merit.”
The statement further declared that “apparently unsettled by the momentum gained by the PDP, he has now insisted on proceeding with this legally baseless action within days. This represents a clear abuse of judicial processes for political ends, an approach reminiscent of past failed attempts to weaponize state institutions against perceived opponents. As before, this effort will collapse under the weight of its own contradictions.”
“For the record, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation had, in two separate legal advisories, conclusively stated that there was no evidence, direct or circumstantial linking Dr. Saraki to the Offa robbery.”
” Furthermore, following investigations by the police and a Special Investigation Team, suspects were duly prosecuted, convicted by the State High Court, and the judgments upheld by the Court of Appeal.” The matter is currently before the Supreme Court.
The party posited that given these established facts, it is evident that the proposed action by the governor lacks any legal, moral, or factual foundation. It is nothing more than a calculated attempt to malign Dr. Saraki and distract public attention from the administration’s mounting challenges. This is the conduct of a government under pressure, struggling with governance deficits, internal party discontent, and declining public confidence.
We also have reason to believe that this move may be influenced by pressure from powerful figures within the governor’s party, following the embarrassment caused by the overwhelming public support witnessed at the PDP rally. The narrative that the opposition had lost relevance in Kwara has clearly been debunked, and the reality now confronting the ruling party appears to have triggered this reaction, the statement stated.
The PDP will not stand by while political tension is deliberately escalated through the recycling of a painful episode in the state’s history. We call on the people of Kwara to remain calm and vigilant.
We also urge security agencies, particularly the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Services in the state, to take note of these developments and act in the interest of peace and stability. Any attempt to manipulate public institutions for political purposes must be firmly resisted.
Kwara State deserves leadership focused on governance, not diversionary tactics. The statement added.
