Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has expressed strong disapproval of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint Nyesom Wike as Minister of the FCT, describing it as the most damaging move of his administration so far.
Speaking in an interview on ARISE Television, the Labour Party lawmaker voiced her concerns, stating that among the president’s missteps, Wike’s appointment stands out as the most consequential. “In my view, this was a serious error in judgment. If I were to list all of President Tinubu’s miscalculations, Minister Wike’s appointment would top that list,” she said.
Kingibe also challenged claims about Wike’s popularity, cautioning that such ratings depend heavily on the methods and sources of the polls. “If Wike’s popularity is based on certain polls, we must consider who conducted them and how reliable they are,” she noted, adding that the real test would come during the upcoming local government elections.

She questioned Wike’s actual influence over the electorate, suggesting that despite his vocal presence, his ability to direct political outcomes remains unproven. “If he can’t get people to follow his lead during elections, then it suggests all the noise amounts to little substance,” she said.
The senator went further to accuse Wike of mismanaging land resources in the FCT. “There was land designated for a general hospital in Bwari, but it was revoked by the Minister. Now it appears to be earmarked for a mall or market,” she alleged. She also accused the minister of aggressively pursuing ground rent collections, even from diplomatic missions.
On accountability, Kingibe expressed concern over the lack of transparency regarding the FCT’s internally generated revenue (IGR). “Aside from the budget, nothing else goes through the National Assembly. Wike manages the Treasury Single Account and other funds without proper reporting. I intend to present documents to the appropriate oversight bodies to demand accountability,” she declared.
