South Africa Signals Readiness to Host 2026 WAFCON Amid Morocco’s Uncertainty

Posted on February 2, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on South Africa Signals Readiness to Host 2026 WAFCON Amid Morocco’s Uncertainty

South Africa has emerged as a possible last-minute host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following growing uncertainty surrounding Morocco’s reported inability to stage the tournament barely 60 days before the scheduled kick-off.

The development has sparked widespread attention across African football circles, given the advanced stage of preparations by participating teams and the logistical demands of hosting a continental tournament of such scale.

Reports suggesting Morocco may withdraw from hosting duties prompted public comments from South African officials, who indicated that the country is prepared to step in if required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, stated that the country possesses the necessary infrastructure, organisational capacity and experience to host major international sporting events on short notice.

She pointed to South Africa’s world-class stadiums, transport networks and prior experience hosting global competitions, noting that these assets place the country in a strong position to rescue the tournament if CAF formally requests intervention.

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is expected to feature 16 national teams, with matches originally scheduled to run from mid-March to early April 2026, making the timing of any host change particularly sensitive.

However, the situation remains fluid, as South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, later clarified that no official decision has been taken to strip Morocco of hosting rights.

According to the minister, Morocco remains the officially designated host nation, and any change to that status would require a formal decision by CAF, followed by government approvals and organisational guarantees from the South African Football Association (SAFA).

The clarification suggests that South Africa’s comments should be viewed as contingency planning, rather than confirmation of a completed takeover of hosting responsibilities.

CAF, for its part, has yet to issue an official statement confirming Morocco’s withdrawal or announcing a replacement host, leaving teams, sponsors and fans awaiting clarity.

Football analysts note that a late host change would be highly unusual, though not impossible, particularly if CAF prioritises safeguarding the tournament’s integrity and schedule.

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations remains a flagship competition for women’s football on the continent, and any disruption to its organisation could have significant sporting and commercial implications.

As the countdown to kick-off continues, all eyes are now on CAF to provide definitive guidance on the tournament’s host nation and reassure stakeholders that the 2026 WAFCON will proceed smoothly as planned.

Football, WAFCON
