KATSINA, Nigeria
Katsina State is gearing up for a grand celebration of World Hausa Day on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, promising a vibrant showcase of Hausa culture, language, and heritage. The event will feature public lectures, cultural displays, and traditional festivities, drawing participants from across Nigeria and the global Hausa community.
According to the organisers, preparations are in top gear, with the day’s activities designed to highlight the historical depth and contemporary relevance of the Hausa language. Public lectures will explore the language’s role in trade, diplomacy, and identity, while cultural exhibitions will celebrate Hausa arts, crafts, music, and attire.
One of the key attractions will be a durbar procession, a colourful parade of traditional rulers and horsemen adorned in regal attire, reflecting centuries-old traditions. The state will also host panel discussions where scholars, linguists, and cultural advocates will share insights on preserving and promoting the Hausa language in a rapidly changing world.
World Hausa Day, known locally as Ranar Hausa, has been marked annually on August 26 since 2015, uniting millions of Hausa speakers and enthusiasts across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the diaspora. What began as a grassroots movement on social media has grown into a global cultural phenomenon, with Katsina emerging this year as a key focal point of the celebrations.
Cultural promoters say the 2025 theme emphasises youth engagement and cross-border unity, with events planned in over 20 countries. Katsina’s hosting, they add, reflects its historic role as one of the cultural heartlands of the Hausa people.
