SEC Warns Nigerians Against GVEST Global, Flags Firm Over Illegal Investment Schemes (Plus: How to spot a Ponzi Scheme)

Posted on August 25, 2025August 25, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on SEC Warns Nigerians Against GVEST Global, Flags Firm Over Illegal Investment Schemes (Plus: How to spot a Ponzi Scheme)

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cautioned Nigerians to steer clear of GVEST Global, describing the company as an unregistered investment adviser and fund manager that is promoting illegal investment schemes.

In a public notice, the Commission explained that GVEST Global also operates under different names, including GVEST (Alausa) Cooperative Multipurpose Limited, GVEST Investment Limited, and GTEXT Holdings. None of these entities, the SEC stressed, is licensed to act as an investment adviser, fund manager, or solicitor in Nigeria’s capital market.

Investigations carried out by the regulator show that GVEST Global has relied heavily on aggressive online marketing and social media campaigns to attract unsuspecting investors.

According to the SEC, the activities of the company display typical features of Ponzi schemes, which promise unusually high returns but collapse when they can no longer recruit new participants.

The Commission therefore urged the public not to engage with GVEST Global or its associates in any investment transaction, warning that anyone who chooses to do so is acting at their own risk.

The advisory comes as part of SEC’s wider efforts to protect Nigerians from fraudulent operators taking advantage of the search for quick and easy profits.

Investors were reminded to always verify the registration status of any investment firm through the Commission’s official portal before committing their funds. SEC emphasized that genuine operators in Nigeria’s capital market are properly licensed and subject to regulation, unlike outfits such as GVEST Global which function outside the law.

For Nigerians, this latest warning is another reminder that not all opportunities presented online are genuine. Quick-rich promises may appear attractive, but without proper licensing and oversight, they could end in financial loss. The advice remains simple: verify before you invest, and when in doubt, walk away.

How to Spot a Ponzi Scheme

  1. Unrealistic Returns – If the promise of profit sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
  2. No Clear Business Model – Legitimate firms explain how profits are generated. Ponzi schemes often hide behind vague claims.
  3. Aggressive Marketing – Heavy reliance on social media and referrals instead of transparent financial reporting is a red flag.
  4. Pressure to Reinvest – Fraudulent schemes often encourage investors to “roll over” profits rather than withdraw them.
  5. Unregistered Operators – Always check SEC’s official portal. If a company is not listed, don’t invest.
