From September 1, 2025, Nigerians applying for passports within the country will have to pay double the current fees. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed the sharp increase, describing it as part of ongoing reforms to sustain the quality and global acceptability of the Nigerian passport.
Under the new regime, a 32-page passport with five-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, while the 64-page booklet with ten-year validity will go for ₦200,000. Until now, these same passports were issued at ₦50,000 and ₦100,000 respectively.

The new charges apply only to applications made within Nigeria. Nigerians living abroad will continue to pay in dollars, with fees remaining at around $150 for the 32-page and $230 for the 64-page booklet.
Immigration authorities say the review is necessary to keep up with rising production costs, improve service delivery, and align with international standards. The move also ties into the Federal Government’s push for local production of passport booklets, a policy aimed at reducing reliance on imports and ensuring self-sufficiency.
This adjustment marks the second major increase in less than two years. In September 2024, fees were raised from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000 for the 32-page booklet, and from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000 for the 64-page option. With the new jump, Nigerians will now pay nearly six times what the document cost just six years ago.
For many citizens, the latest hike may present fresh challenges, especially for students, business travelers, and families planning international trips. On the other hand, officials insist the price reflects the true cost of producing a secure, internationally recognized passport and will help deliver faster, more efficient services.
As the September 1 deadline draws near, Nigerians seeking new passports or renewals may be rushing to beat the increase.
