BREAKING: Works Minister David Umahi Threatens Abuja–Lokoja Road Contractors With EFCC, ICPC Probe

Posted on September 20, 2025September 20, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on BREAKING: Works Minister David Umahi Threatens Abuja–Lokoja Road Contractors With EFCC, ICPC Probe

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has issued a stern warning to three construction firms handling critical sections of the Abuja–Lokoja highway, threatening to report them to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged poor performance.

Umahi gave the warning on Saturday during an unscheduled inspection of the highway, which links the Federal Capital Territory to Kogi State and serves as a major gateway to the South-West and South-East.

The minister, who personally led the monitoring tour from Abuja to the Obajana Junction, expressed disappointment with the “slow pace and substandard delivery” of ongoing works despite repeated government funding.

“This project is a key economic corridor. We cannot continue to tolerate excuses while Nigerians suffer on this road. If these contractors fail to meet the agreed standards and timelines, we will invite the EFCC and ICPC to investigate how public funds have been applied,” Umahi declared.

The Abuja–Lokoja road, notorious for heavy traffic and frequent accidents, has been under various phases of reconstruction for years. Commuters and transporters have repeatedly complained about potholes, delays, and rising transportation costs due to the project’s prolonged completion timeline.

Umahi reiterated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to enforce accountability and ensure that road projects funded by taxpayers deliver lasting value.

He warned that any contractor who fails to meet specifications will face contract termination in addition to prosecution.

The minister’s threat marks a new phase in the federal government’s push for transparency in Nigeria’s infrastructure projects, signaling that non-performing contractors will no longer escape scrutiny.
