Canal+ Finalizes R55 Billion Takeover of MultiChoice, Secures Full Control of DStv & GOtv

Posted on September 22, 2025September 22, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Canal+ Finalizes R55 Billion Takeover of MultiChoice, Secures Full Control of DStv & GOtv

French media powerhouse Canal+ has officially taken the reins of MultiChoice Group, the South African company behind popular pay-TV services DStv and GOtv, in a landmark deal worth around R55 billion.

After months of negotiations, shareholder approvals, and regulatory scrutiny, the French broadcaster now holds effective control of Africa’s largest pay-television operator, setting the stage for a new era in the continent’s entertainment industry.

The acquisition, which has been described as one of the biggest media transactions in African history, was cleared by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal earlier this year.

To secure the approval, Canal+ agreed to several public-interest conditions, including stronger investment in local content, support for small and medium-sized businesses, and increased participation of historically disadvantaged South Africans in the company’s ownership structure.

These commitments were key in navigating South Africa’s strict broadcasting rules, which limit foreign control of licensed broadcasters.
Under the terms of the deal, Canal+ offered R125 per share to MultiChoice investors and successfully secured more than 48% of the company’s shares, enough to give it decisive influence over strategic decisions.

To comply with South Africa’s foreign ownership limits, MultiChoice’s domestic broadcasting license will be housed in a new entity, LicenceCo, which will remain majority-owned by South Africans while giving Canal+ a minority stake and certain voting rights.
For millions of DStv and GOtv subscribers across Africa, the takeover is expected to bring both opportunities and uncertainty.

Canal+ is promising to inject fresh capital and creative energy into MultiChoice’s platforms, expanding African storytelling while leveraging its global catalogue of films, series, and sports content. The deal could mean more diverse programming and technological upgrades on services like Showmax, which is already competing fiercely with Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Industry analysts say the acquisition signals a bold bid by Canal+ to dominate the fast-growing African streaming and pay-TV market. With MultiChoice’s deep footprint across more than 40 countries, the French company gains a powerful springboard to reach tens of millions of viewers from Cape Town to Lagos. But challenges remain: regulators will be watching closely to ensure that promises of local investment are kept, and consumers will be wary of any price increases as Canal+ looks to recoup its massive fund outlay.

As the deal moves toward final completion in early October, all eyes will be on how Canal+ balances its global ambitions with the sensitivities of operating in Africa’s diverse media landscape. For now, one thing is clear, the entertainment map of Africa has been redrawn, and a new chapter has begun for DStv, GOtv, and the millions who tune in every day.
