Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that it will stop selling petrol in naira beginning Sunday, September 28, 2025, after running out of crude oil allocations priced in the local currency.
In a memo to customers, the refinery explained that it had already sold petroleum products beyond the volume covered by its naira-crude quota and could no longer sustain petrol sales in naira.
Customers who have paid in naira but are yet to receive delivery were advised to request refunds immediately.
The crude-for-naira policy, introduced by the federal government to make local fuel supplies more affordable and reduce foreign exchange pressure, had allowed Dangote to buy crude in naira for domestic petrol sales. But with the allocation exhausted, the refinery is shifting sales to foreign currency transactions until the government provides a new supply arrangement.

Industry observers warn that the suspension may push pump prices higher as marketers turn to dollar purchases to secure supplies, increasing pressure on the naira and fuelling inflation.
Some analysts predict that petrol could sell for more than ₦900 per litre if the refinery fully switches to dollar pricing.
This is not the first time Dangote has halted naira transactions.
In March 2025, the refinery briefly suspended local currency sales over similar concerns about exchange rate mismatches and financial strain. The latest decision also comes amid reports of internal labour disputes and job cuts, adding tension to an already volatile downstream market.
While the company has promised to update customers if naira sales can resume, the move underscores the growing challenges of balancing Nigeria’s currency volatility with the need to keep fuel prices stable and supply steady.
