Two U.S. Navy Aircraft Crash Within 30 Minutes in South China Sea, Trump Calls Incident “Very Unusual”

Posted on October 27, 2025October 27, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on Two U.S. Navy Aircraft Crash Within 30 Minutes in South China Sea, Trump Calls Incident “Very Unusual”

Two U.S. Navy aircraft operating from the USS Nimitz have crashed in separate incidents over the South China Sea within just 30 minutes of each other, the U.S. Pacific Fleet confirmed on Monday. The back-to-back mishaps, which occurred during routine operations, have been described as highly unusual and are now under thorough investigation. Fortunately, all crew members from both aircraft were rescued alive and are in stable condition.

According to official naval reports, the first crash involved an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter, which went down at around 2:45 p.m. local time while conducting standard flight operations from the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group. Roughly half an hour later, an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet from the same carrier also crashed into the sea in a separate incident. Both aircraft were operating within international waters of the South China Sea when the events occurred.

Search and rescue teams deployed from the carrier acted swiftly, recovering all five service members — three from the Sea Hawk and two from the Super Hornet — within minutes of the crashes. Medical evaluations conducted on board confirmed that all rescued personnel were safe and responding well to treatment. The U.S. Navy noted that despite the loss of the aircraft, the prompt response of the flight deck and rescue crews prevented what could have been a major tragedy.

In a statement released by the U.S. Pacific Fleet, officials emphasized that the two crashes happened under routine circumstances, with no evidence yet of hostile action or weather interference. “All personnel involved are safe and stable. The cause of both incidents is currently under investigation,” the statement read. Preliminary inquiries are focusing on mechanical integrity, operational procedures, and possible environmental or fuel-related issues.

Speaking aboard Air Force One during his flight from Malaysia to Japan, U.S. President Donald Trump described the twin crashes as “very unusual” and hinted that fuel contamination could be a possible cause. “They think it might be bad fuel. We’re gonna find out. Nothing to hide, sir,” he told reporters on Monday. Trump added that a full report would be made public once military investigators determine the cause of the mishaps.

The incidents come at a time when the United States has increased naval operations across the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the South China Sea — a region known for its strategic significance and territorial tensions involving China, the Philippines, and several other Southeast Asian nations. The USS Nimitz, one of America’s largest aircraft carriers, has been central to U.S. presence in the area, often conducting patrols and exercises aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation.

Beijing reacted cautiously to the news, with China’s Foreign Ministry stating that it would offer humanitarian assistance if requested by Washington. However, the ministry reiterated its long-standing criticism of U.S. “military operations in contested waters,” suggesting that the continuous presence of foreign warships contributes to regional instability. Analysts believe the back-to-back crashes could heighten diplomatic tensions as both nations monitor each other’s activities in the disputed sea.

Aviation experts have noted that the loss of two high-performance aircraft from the same carrier within half an hour is exceedingly rare, raising concerns about possible systemic faults in equipment or logistics. While no link has yet been confirmed, the Navy’s investigation will likely examine shared maintenance routines, fueling systems, and operational timing to rule out any chain-reaction failures. The possibility of contaminated fuel, as suggested by President Trump, will also be closely scrutinized.

The U.S. Navy is expected to release further findings once both crash investigations are complete. In the meantime, flight operations from the USS Nimitz have reportedly resumed under heightened safety protocols, ensuring no interruption to the carrier’s ongoing mission in the Indo-Pacific. The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, noting that lessons from the incident would inform future operational safety measures.

While the safe recovery of all crew members offers relief, the incident underscores the inherent risks of naval aviation and the complexity of operating advanced aircraft in challenging environments. As investigations continue, the South China Sea remains under global watch — not just for its geopolitical importance, but also as a test ground for the endurance and discipline of U.S. military operations far from home.
