NAF Dismisses Airspace Breach Claim, Says Burkina Faso Landing Was a Safety Emergency

Posted on December 9, 2025December 9, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on NAF Dismisses Airspace Breach Claim, Says Burkina Faso Landing Was a Safety Emergency

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has debunked claims that one of its C-130 military transport aircraft violated the airspace of Burkina Faso, stating that the aircraft’s diversion and landing in Bobo-Dioulasso on December 8 was a precautionary action prompted by a technical fault. According to NAF authorities, the priority at the time was the safety of all personnel onboard, leading the pilots to make an emergency landing at the nearest airport in line with international aviation safety standards.

NAF explained that the aircraft, which departed Lagos en route to Portugal for an official mission, had to divert shortly after takeoff when the crew detected a technical issue that required immediate attention. The pilots reportedly declared the emergency and turned towards the closest available runway, which happened to be in Burkina Faso, a procedure fully recognized under International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules governing emergency operations.

The Air Force confirmed that the aircraft carried 11 personnel, including two crew members and nine passengers, all of whom are safe and in good condition. NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Ehimen Ejodame, emphasized that contrary to circulating reports, the aircraft was neither detained nor grounded by Burkina Faso’s authorities. He added that the crew has been treated cordially since arrival, and necessary technical checks are ongoing to clear the aircraft for continuation of its journey.

However, the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), which comprises Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, issued a different version of events, alleging that the aircraft entered its airspace without prior authorization. AES officials described the landing as a breach of sovereignty and insisted that the aircraft lacked the required overflight clearance. The regional bloc disclosed that its air defence systems were placed on maximum alert following the unexpected landing.

AES authorities went further to warn that henceforth, any aircraft entering its airspace without proper authorization could be intercepted or “neutralized,” a statement that has heightened diplomatic sensitivity across the region. Security analysts say the hardened stance reflects ongoing geopolitical tensions between AES member states and Nigeria, particularly over shifting regional alliances and recent political realignments in the Sahel.

Despite the AES statement, the Nigerian Air Force maintains that the landing was strictly a safety-driven operation, not a deliberate or unauthorized movement. Officials stressed that international aviation rules allow any aircraft facing a safety concern to use the nearest runway, regardless of airspace permissions, as preserving lives overrides all diplomatic protocols in emergency situations.

NAF reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and strict adherence to global aviation safety standards. It assured Nigerians that the aircraft diversion followed standard operating procedures and that communication was immediately established with relevant aviation authorities during the emergency.

Diplomatic channels are reportedly active as both countries work to ensure clarity, prevent misinformation, and maintain regional cooperation. Defence and foreign affairs officials from Nigeria are said to be engaging their counterparts in Burkina Faso to harmonize details and avoid further escalation.

As at the latest update, technical assessments on the aircraft are ongoing, and normal flight operations are expected to resume once engineers certify the aircraft airworthy. NAF urged the public to ignore sensational narratives, insisting that the priority remains the safety of its personnel and adherence to international aviation laws.

With tensions gradually calming, both Nigeria and Burkina Faso are expected to issue further joint updates as investigations conclude and diplomatic consultations continue.
