Katsina, Nigeria – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), through the Joint Task Force North West, has launched a fresh large-scale military operation, codenamed Operation Clean Sweep III, across Matazu Local Government Area and adjoining communities in Katsina State following the abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar.
The operation is aimed at intensifying pressure on armed bandit groups operating within the region and restoring security to communities affected by persistent attacks, kidnappings, and violent criminal activities.
The renewed offensive comes days after the Defence Headquarters confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted alongside his wife while travelling through Katsina State. Security authorities had earlier withheld public comments on the incident due to ongoing rescue efforts involving military and other security agencies.
According to military sources, Operation Clean Sweep III involves coordinated ground and intelligence-driven operations targeting known bandit enclaves, hideouts, and movement corridors within Matazu and neighbouring areas. The operation is expected to deploy additional troops, surveillance assets, and rapid-response units to disrupt criminal networks and prevent further attacks on residents.
Defence authorities have reiterated that the loss of the retired general has strengthened the Armed Forces’ resolve to dismantle terrorist and bandit networks threatening communities across the North-West. Military officials emphasized that the operation forms part of broader efforts to restore lasting peace and protect lives and property in the region.
Major General Abubakar was widely respected for his service to the nation, having held several strategic appointments within the Nigerian Armed Forces, including serving as the military’s chief spokesperson. His contributions to counter-insurgency operations, military public affairs, and professional development within the Armed Forces earned him national recognition.
Residents in parts of Katsina State have continued to express concerns over recurring incidents of banditry, including kidnappings and attacks on rural communities. Security analysts note that sustained military pressure, combined with intelligence gathering and community collaboration, will be critical to the success of the latest operation.
As Operation Clean Sweep III unfolds, authorities have assured residents that every effort is being made to track down criminal elements, secure vulnerable communities, and ensure that those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.
The Defence Headquarters has urged citizens to support security operations by providing credible information that could assist ongoing efforts to combat banditry and restore stability across the region.
