Security operatives have confirmed the death of a notorious kidnap kingpin, Maidawa, following a fierce gun battle in Isanlu, Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The operation, which took place over the weekend, also led to the neutralization of some of his accomplices.
According to security sources, intelligence reports from the Department of State Services (DSS) revealed that Maidawa and his gang were taken down during a coordinated sting operation along the Kwara–Kogi border axis.
Maidawa was widely known in security circles as one of the most feared kidnappers operating in Kwara and neighboring states. His gang was allegedly behind several highway abductions, violent attacks on travelers, and ransom-driven kidnappings that had instilled fear in local communities. He had long been on the wanted list of security agencies for orchestrating cross-border criminal activities.
The death of Maidawa was later relayed to other members of the criminal network by another wanted kidnapper identified as Baccujo.
Reports indicate that he passed the information while traveling on Igboro–Idofin Road and speaking with his associates in Marabar Maigora, Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Authorities disclosed that the crackdown followed renewed directives from the Kwara State Government to intensify the fight against kidnapping, which has been a rising threat to commuters and residents in recent months.
Security forces further assured the public that ongoing operations would cover high-risk areas including Ekiti, Ifelodun, Isin, Edu, and Patigi LGAs. The aim, they said, is to dismantle criminal gangs, protect civilians, and ensure safer communities across the state.
Speaking on the operation, a senior DSS official who requested anonymity said: “This is a significant breakthrough in our mission to dismantle kidnapping syndicates in Kwara and beyond. We will sustain intelligence-driven raids until criminal networks are completely neutralized.”
Also reacting, a spokesperson for the Kwara State Government reaffirmed support for security agencies, stating: “The government is fully committed to providing all necessary backing to ensure that kidnappers and their sponsors have no hiding place in Kwara. The safety of our people remains our top priority.”
