The Super Eagles of Nigeria rounded off their AFCON 2025 group stage campaign in emphatic fashion with a 3–1 victory over Uganda, completing a flawless group stage run and underlining their status as one of the tournament’s early favourites.
Going into the final Group C fixture with qualification already secured, Nigeria still approached the match with intensity and focus, determined to maintain momentum and finish top of the group with maximum points.
Uganda started brightly, showing urgency as they chased a first win of the tournament, but Nigeria’s composure and superior ball control soon began to dictate the rhythm of the encounter.
The breakthrough arrived in the first half when Paul Onuachu found the back of the net to give the Super Eagles the lead, capitalising on sustained pressure and rewarding Nigeria’s patient build-up play.
The game tilted decisively in Nigeria’s favour shortly after the interval when Uganda were reduced to ten men following a red card, a turning point that left the Cranes stretched defensively.
With the numerical advantage, Nigeria increased the tempo, and Raphael Onyedika struck twice in quick succession to extend the lead, effectively putting the contest beyond Uganda’s reach.
To their credit, Uganda continued to battle and were rewarded with a consolation goal late in the match, briefly lifting their supporters and showing resilience despite their difficult campaign.
The final whistle confirmed Nigeria’s perfect group stage record, three wins from three matches as the Super Eagles finished top of Group C with nine points and growing confidence.
The result also marked the end of the road for Uganda, who exited the competition without a win, while Nigeria now turns full attention to the knockout phase of the tournament.
With squad depth, tactical discipline and attacking efficiency on display, the Super Eagles head into the Round of 16 in strong form, sending a clear message to rivals that they remain serious contenders for the AFCON 2025 title.
