ICPC Will Continue Probe of Ex-NMDPRA Boss Despite Dangote Withdrawing Petition

Posted on January 8, 2026January 8, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on ICPC Will Continue Probe of Ex-NMDPRA Boss Despite Dangote Withdrawing Petition

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to investigate allegations against Engineer Farouk Ahmed, the immediate past Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), even after billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote officially withdrew his petition against him.

According to a statement issued by the ICPC, the commission received a “Notice of Withdrawal of Petition against Engineer Farouk Ahmed” on January 5, 2026, from the legal counsel of Dangote, Dr. O.J. Onoja, SAN and Associates. The letter confirmed that the petition lodged on December 16, 2025 was withdrawn in its entirety and that another law enforcement agency had taken over the matter.

However, the anti-graft agency stressed that it will continue its investigation in accordance with the provisions of Sections 3(14) and 27(3) of the ICPC Act, noting that the inquiry had already begun before the withdrawal and remains ongoing “in the interest of the Nigerian people and the Nigerian state.”

Background of the Petition

In December 2025, Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, formally petitioned the ICPC, accusing Farouk Ahmed of corruption and financial impropriety during his tenure as NMDPRA boss. The petition alleged that the former regulator lived beyond his legitimate means as a public servant and cited claims that he spent over $7 million on the overseas education of his four children, without any lawful income to justify such expenses. Dangote’s lawyers sought Ahmed’s investigation, arrest, and prosecution.

Following the submission of the petition, Ahmed resigned from office less than 24 hours later after a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in a move widely seen as linked to the controversy.

ICPC’s Warranty to Continue Probe

Despite Dangote’s withdrawal, the ICPC maintained that its statutory mandate allows it to pursue investigations independently of a petitioner’s withdrawal, especially when inquiries have already commenced. The commission’s focus, it said, is on transparency, accountability, and the fight against corruption for the benefit of Nigerians.

The clarification from ICPC dispels earlier speculation that the withdrawal might abruptly end the process and signals that the anti-graft body is prepared to carry forward its probe based on the merits of the information already gathered.

What Comes Next

The ICPC’s ongoing actions are expected to draw attention from lawmakers, civil society, and the public as the investigation progresses. While details of what evidence the agency has thus far uncovered remain undisclosed, its determination to continue the probe notwithstanding the petition’s withdrawal underscores a broader push against institutional corruption in Nigeria’s public sector.
