Fear has spread across parts of Oyo State following a late-night attack on the National Park Service (NPS) office in Oloka, Orire Local Government Area, where four officers were reportedly killed by suspected bandits.
The violent incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday when armed attackers reportedly invaded the National Park facility under the cover of darkness, taking the operatives on duty by surprise. The assailants were said to have gained access to the area quietly before unleashing a coordinated assault.
Security sources disclosed that at least four NPS personnel lost their lives during the attack, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The scale and precision of the operation triggered panic among residents of surrounding communities, many of whom now live in fear of possible follow-up attacks.
Eyewitnesses described the raid as swift and brutal, with heavy gunfire shattering the calm of the night and forcing residents to flee indoors for safety.
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that officers of the National Park Service were attacked by gunmen yet to be identified.
“Yes, there was an attack by unknown assailants on personnel of the National Park Service. The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, alongside other security chiefs, is currently proceeding to the scene,” Ayanlade said.
He further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical police teams, Mobile Police Force operatives, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to the area to prevent any further breach of security.
In response to the attack, security presence has been significantly reinforced in Oloka and neighboring communities, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The incident has renewed concerns over security around forest reserves and national parks in the South-West, as residents and stakeholders call for stronger protective measures to prevent future attacks.
