The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out a precision airstrike that destroyed a concealed terrorist enclave in Borno State, with about 12 insurgents reportedly killed in the operation.
The strike was conducted on August 4 by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI following intelligence reports indicating renewed terrorist activities around Chiralia, a heavily wooded area that insurgents have reportedly used as a hideout because of its difficult terrain and dense vegetation.
Military sources said an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft was deployed at about 11:40 a.m. for an armed reconnaissance mission over the suspected location.
During the surveillance operation, the crew reportedly detected several terrorists moving within the enclave. They also identified structures concealed beneath thick vegetation, which were assessed to be used as shelters, logistics facilities and staging areas for terrorist operations.
After confirming the targets, the surveillance platform continued monitoring the area while transmitting real-time intelligence and target coordinates to the strike aircraft. The aircraft subsequently carried out a series of precision attacks against the identified positions.
A post-strike Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) reportedly confirmed that the terrorist camp had been completely destroyed, with the concealed structures reduced to rubble.
Approximately 12 insurgents were said to have been neutralised in the operation. Military sources also reported secondary explosions and prolonged fires at the site, suggesting that supplies, equipment and other materials stored within the enclave were destroyed in the bombardment.
The operation was described by military sources as an intelligence-driven engagement that highlighted the increasing coordination between aerial surveillance platforms and precision strike assets operated by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI.
According to the sources, the destruction of the enclave is expected to weaken the affected terrorist cell by denying its members a sanctuary from which they could regroup, plan attacks and maintain their logistics network.
The latest operation forms part of the ongoing air campaign against terrorist strongholds across the North-East, particularly in remote forested areas where insurgents have continued to seek refuge following sustained military pressure.
While the overall security situation in the theatre was described as relatively calm, military authorities cautioned that the environment remains unpredictable because of the constantly changing movements of terrorist groups. Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, however, remain on offensive operations with the objective of dismantling remaining terrorist enclaves and restoring lasting security across the region.
