June 12 Becomes Annual Presidential Address Day as Tinubu Attempts To Sets New Democratic Tone

Posted on June 12, 2025June 12, 2025 By Rextun boss No Comments on June 12 Becomes Annual Presidential Address Day as Tinubu Attempts To Sets New Democratic Tone

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commemorated Nigeria’s 2025 Democracy Day with a groundbreaking speech at the National Assembly that now doubles as a historic first as June 12 has now officially been designated as the annual Presidential Address Day by lawmakers.

The president’s address, delivered during a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives, celebrated the enduring spirit of Nigerian democracy while mapping out his administration’s plans to strengthen unity, economic stability, and democratic institutions.

Tinubu began by honoring the legacy of MKO Abiola and the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes who laid down their lives for Nigeria’s freedom. “June 12 is more than a date, it is a beacon of resistance, hope, and the people’s ultimate victory,” he declared.

In a move lauded by many across the political spectrum, the President announced posthumous recognition and national pardons for fallen democratic icons. Among them were Kudirat Abiola, and members of the Ogoni Nine, including the revered environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa.

This decision was widely interpreted as a signal of national reconciliation and a call for unity. The president emphasized the need to heal past wounds and forge a future where justice and memory coexist.

Amid growing public concern over the shrinking civic space, Tinubu directly dismissed rumors of a one-party agenda, pledging his administration’s unwavering commitment to a multi-party democratic system. “Democracy thrives in diversity,” he asserted.

He went on to underscore the importance of executive-legislative cooperation, reminding lawmakers of pivotal democratic milestones they helped shape, from resisting the third-term agenda in 2006 to upholding constitutional transfer of power in 2010.

Economic reform featured heavily in the address. President Tinubu announced that Nigeria’s GDP grew by 3.4% in 2024, attributing this to tough but necessary reforms such as the fuel subsidy removal, Forex unification, and tax harmonization.

He also unveiled progress on several fiscal initiatives, including the ₦100 billion National Credit Guarantee Scheme, aimed at improving access to credit for SMEs and youth entrepreneurs across Nigeria.

Education took center stage with Tinubu reaffirming the launch of the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). This program will enable thousands of Nigerian students to access interest-free loans, ensuring no student is left behind due to financial hardship.

Digital transformation was another highlight, as Tinubu announced that his administration is rolling out a national fibre-optic broadband network, aimed at enhancing internet penetration, job creation, and tech innovation.

The President’s message was clear: Nigeria must embrace the future with discipline, courage, and unity. “There’s no turning back. We must stand together as one nation under God, ready to face the future,” he stated firmly.

Not everyone, however, was satisfied with the day’s events. Across Lagos, Abuja, and over 19 Nigerian states, members of the Take It Back Movement and civil society groups protested rising inflation, insecurity, and what they see as a slow pace of reform.

Protesters carried placards calling for better wages, reduced food prices, and urgent action on security. Many also criticized what they termed a “disconnect between the political elite and everyday Nigerians.”

Despite the protests, many analysts viewed the day as a strategic reset for Tinubu’s presidency, one that attempted to blend symbolism with substance, recognizing history while setting policy direction.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the president’s speech as “visionary,” reaffirming the legislature’s readiness to collaborate on reforms that promote investor confidence and protect democratic values.

The declaration of June 12 as the official Presidential Address Day is a symbolic win for institutionalizing transparency and consistent national reflection. It may serve as a benchmark for holding leaders accountable annually.

With the nation’s political temperature rising and economic challenges mounting, the real test lies ahead. But with June 12 now bearing dual symbolism, democracy and accountability; Nigeria may have taken one step closer to a truly participatory democracy.

As Tinubu exited the National Assembly chamber to a standing ovation from lawmakers, Nigerians are watching closely, not just in celebration, but in expectation of change that truly touches lives.
