Morocco to File Legal Complaint After Controversial AFCON Final Against Senegal

Posted on January 20, 2026January 20, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Morocco to File Legal Complaint After Controversial AFCON Final Against Senegal

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has announced plans to file a formal legal complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and world football governing body FIFA following the controversial end to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Morocco and Senegal. The final, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, ended in a 1–0 extra-time victory for Senegal but was overshadowed by incidents that disrupted the flow and integrity of the match.

The controversy centred on events late in regulation time when Morocco were awarded a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review adjudged that Moroccan forward Brahim Díaz had been fouled in the penalty area. The decision sparked strong protests from Senegalese players and officials, who argued against the call and expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating.

In an unprecedented move for a major continental final, Senegal’s players temporarily walked off the pitch in protest, leading to a prolonged stoppage that lasted several minutes. Match officials eventually persuaded the Senegal team to return to the field, allowing play to resume amid heightened tension and scrutiny from fans, officials, and global viewers.

After the delay, Morocco took the penalty but failed to convert, missing a crucial opportunity to take the lead. The interruption and the missed spot kick proved decisive moments in the final, as the match proceeded into extra time with both teams visibly affected by the earlier disruption.

Senegal capitalised early in extra time, scoring the winning goal through midfielder Pape Gueye. The goal ultimately sealed the title for Senegal, but the manner in which the final unfolded ensured that post-match discussions focused as much on officiating and conduct as on the football itself.

In a statement released after the match, the FRMF said it would submit official complaints to CAF and FIFA, citing Senegal’s temporary withdrawal from play and the broader impact of the incident on match fairness. The Moroccan federation maintained that the penalty decision was consistent with the laws of the game and VAR protocols, and argued that the walk-off constituted a serious breach of competition regulations.

Morocco’s football authorities also expressed concern that the stoppage altered the psychological and competitive balance of the final, particularly given the high-stakes nature of an AFCON championship match. While the federation has not specified the exact remedies it is seeking, it emphasised the need for accountability and clarity from governing bodies.

The incident has drawn reactions from football administrators beyond Africa. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF officials publicly criticised the events surrounding the walk-off, describing them as unacceptable and stressing the importance of respect for referees and adherence to the rules of the game.

CAF has since confirmed that it is reviewing official reports, video footage, and referee assessments from the final. The continental body is expected to determine whether disciplinary measures are warranted against individuals or teams involved in the disruption.

As the dust settles on one of the most dramatic AFCON finals in recent history, Morocco’s decision to pursue legal and administrative action highlights ongoing concerns about officiating standards, player conduct, and governance in African football. The outcome of the complaints to CAF and FIFA could set an important precedent for how similar disputes are handled in future continental competitions.
