FG to Deploy Military Veterans to Secure Ungoverned Spaces, Boost National Security and Economic Growth

Posted on January 28, 2026January 28, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on FG to Deploy Military Veterans to Secure Ungoverned Spaces, Boost National Security and Economic Growth

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to deploy military veterans to help secure Nigeria’s ungoverned spaces as part of a broader strategy to strengthen national security and stimulate economic activities in conflict-affected areas across the country.

The initiative was announced following the inauguration of an 18-member committee tasked with reclaiming ungoverned spaces for economic viability and repositioning the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires and Veterans. The committee was inaugurated at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja.

According to the Federal Government, the move represents a strategic shift toward a more inclusive and sustainable security framework that combines security enforcement with socio-economic development, especially in areas where government presence has remained weak over the years.

Speaking on the initiative, defence authorities explained that the deployment of retired military personnel, who possess years of operational experience, will complement the efforts of serving security agencies by enhancing surveillance, intelligence gathering, and community engagement.

The government noted that many ungoverned spaces have become havens for banditry, insurgency, and other criminal activities, largely due to the absence of sustained security and economic opportunities, a gap the veteran deployment programme aims to address.

Under the proposed framework, veterans are expected to play dual roles by supporting security operations while also helping to create a safe environment for farming, commerce, and small-scale industries to thrive in previously volatile regions.

The committee’s mandate includes developing strategies to integrate veterans into national development efforts, strengthening the Nigerian Legion for improved operational efficiency, and recommending mechanisms for effective oversight of reclaimed territories.

Officials believe that engaging veterans will also ease pressure on frontline troops, allowing active military units to focus on high-risk operations while retired personnel provide stabilisation and support services in recovering communities.

The Federal Government further stated that the initiative aligns with its commitment to improving the welfare and reintegration of retired service members by providing them with meaningful roles that contribute to national stability.

Security experts have long argued that addressing insecurity in Nigeria requires more than military force, stressing the importance of combining security interventions with economic empowerment and community participation to achieve lasting peace.

The committee is expected to submit actionable recommendations that will guide the full implementation of the programme, which the Federal Government says could significantly reduce criminal activity, restore state authority in neglected areas, and unlock economic potential in conflict-affected regions nationwide.
