The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a three-day stretch of sunshine interspersed with cloudiness and thunderstorms across Nigeria, signaling a dynamic weather pattern from Monday through Wednesday.
In its latest weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency said northern Nigeria will largely experience sunny skies with patches of clouds during the mornings throughout the forecast period. However, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall are expected later in the day in parts of Taraba State.
For the North-Central region, NiMet anticipates cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine in the early hours, gradually giving way to thunderstorms and light rains in states such as Kogi and Benue as the day progresses.
In the southern region, mornings are expected to begin with cloudy skies and chances of thunderstorms, particularly over Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. As the day unfolds, rainfall activity is predicted to intensify, spreading across much of the region.
By Tuesday, the pattern is expected to persist nationwide, with increased thunderstorm activity. Northern states including Kaduna and Taraba may see early morning rains, while later in the day, moderate rainfall is forecast across parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi. Similarly, the North-Central zone, including the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue, is likely to experience isolated morning thunderstorms followed by more widespread rainfall later.
Southern states are projected to witness even stronger weather activity, with moderate rains and widespread thunderstorms becoming more pronounced as the day advances.
On Wednesday, sunny conditions with cloud patches are expected to continue in the northern region during the morning, while thunderstorms with moderate rains may develop later in parts of Adamawa, Borno, Kaduna, and Taraba. The North-Central region is also likely to experience isolated thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours.
The southern belt, including Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, is forecast to experience widespread thunderstorms, especially later in the day after a cloudy start.
NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in some areas and advised residents to take safety precautions. The agency urged the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees due to the risk of falling branches.
It also warned of high temperatures leading to thermal discomfort, recommending breathable clothing, proper ventilation, and adequate hydration. Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe and efficient flight planning.
The agency reiterated the importance of staying updated with its forecasts as weather conditions evolve across the country.
