Oil Prices Surge Towards $100 as Houthi Strikes Hit Saudi Energy Facilities

Posted on September 9, 2026September 9, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Oil Prices Surge Towards $100 as Houthi Strikes Hit Saudi Energy Facilities

Global oil prices climbed sharply after Iran-backed Houthi forces launched a wave of missile and drone attacks against energy infrastructure in southern Saudi Arabia, intensifying fears of further disruption to an already strained global oil supply chain.

The attacks, which occurred on Tuesday, September 8, targeted several locations including Abha, Jazan, Najran and Khamis Mushait. Saudi authorities said the strikes injured 73 people and triggered fires at a number of energy facilities and utilities.

Among the facilities affected was Saudi Aramco’s major refinery in Jazan, which has a processing capacity of about 400,000 barrels per day. The attacks forced temporary operational disruptions as emergency teams worked to contain fires and assess the extent of the damage.

The renewed violence immediately sent a fresh risk premium through international crude markets. Brent crude futures rose 92 cents, or 0.9 per cent, to settle at $97.92 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained $1.55, or 1.7 per cent, to close at $93.03. Both benchmarks reached their highest closing levels in several weeks.

The market reaction reflects growing concerns that continued attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure could reduce the amount of crude available to international buyers. Traders are particularly sensitive to developments in the region because Saudi Arabia remains one of the world’s most important oil producers and exporters.

The latest attacks also come against the backdrop of wider instability affecting oil transportation through the Middle East. Disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, have already complicated global energy flows and contributed to heightened price volatility.

Analysts say the situation could become significantly more serious if the conflict spreads to additional oil-producing facilities or threatens alternative export routes. The Bab el-Mandeb waterway, linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, is also strategically important for energy shipments and has faced increasing security threats from the Houthis.

Saudi Arabia has condemned the attacks and indicated that it would take measures to defend its territory. The escalation has also prompted retaliatory Saudi strikes in Yemen, raising fears that hostilities could develop into a broader confrontation between Riyadh and the Houthi movement.

The immediate consequence for consumers could be higher energy costs if elevated crude prices persist. Prolonged disruptions could feed into the prices of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products, while also increasing transportation and production costs across several economies.

Market analysts are therefore closely watching whether the damage to Saudi energy infrastructure proves temporary or results in a sustained reduction in production and exports. Brent crude has subsequently moved above the $100-a-barrel threshold amid continuing Middle East tensions, underscoring the sensitivity of the market to further attacks and supply disruptions.

The latest development has consequently transformed another episode of regional violence into a major global economic concern. With Saudi energy infrastructure increasingly exposed to attack and critical shipping routes already under pressure, oil traders are bracing for further volatility as governments and markets monitor the next phase of the conflict.
