FG Slashes Import Tariffs on Vehicles, Sugar, Palm Oil Under 2026 Fiscal Policy Reset

Posted on April 11, 2026April 11, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on FG Slashes Import Tariffs on Vehicles, Sugar, Palm Oil Under 2026 Fiscal Policy Reset

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a sweeping reduction in import tariffs on key commodities, including vehicles, sugar, and palm oil, as part of its newly introduced 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures (FPM).

The policy, approved by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, was conveyed through an official circular dated April 1, 2026. It replaces the 2023 fiscal framework and introduces revised duty rates across 127 tariff lines, aimed at stimulating economic growth and easing pressure on critical sectors.

A major highlight of the reforms is the significant cut in import duties on fully built passenger vehicles. Under the new regime, tariffs on cars—including four-wheel drives and station wagons—have been reduced from 70 percent to 40 percent, marking one of the most notable adjustments in the policy.

Similarly, import duties on agricultural and food-related items have been lowered. Crude palm oil now attracts an effective tariff rate of 28.75 percent, down from 35 percent, while raw cane sugar tariffs have been reduced to between 55 percent and 57.5 percent from the previous 70 percent benchmark.

The government said the tariff reductions are designed to promote industrial growth, improve access to essential goods, and support broader economic stability. Other items affected by the new policy include rice, steel products, ceramics, and selected manufacturing inputs, many of which also recorded downward duty adjustments.

To ease the transition, authorities have granted a 90-day grace period for importers who had initiated transactions before the policy’s commencement, allowing them to clear goods under the previous tariff structure.

However, the policy also introduces new fiscal layers. A revised excise duty regime and a green tax surcharge are scheduled to take effect from July 1, 2026, signaling a balancing approach between tariff relief and revenue generation.

Overall, the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures reflect a recalibration of Nigeria’s trade and fiscal strategy, with the government positioning tariff reductions as a tool to boost productivity, lower import costs, and stimulate key sectors of the economy.
