The Nigerian Army has commenced the relocation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from vulnerable communities in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State to safer zones within Maiduguri, citing a surge in insurgent attacks and growing security concerns.
According to military authorities, the decision followed repeated assaults on settlements and surrounding areas in Monguno, which have exposed displaced populations to heightened risks. The relocation effort is aimed at safeguarding civilians and consolidating security operations in more fortified locations.
The IDPs are being moved into designated camps and secure facilities in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, where the military maintains stronger operational presence. Officials noted that the move would enable better protection of civilians while allowing troops to intensify counter-insurgency efforts in affected frontline communities.
Monguno, a town in northern Borno, has long been a flashpoint in Nigeria’s protracted insurgency, with recurrent attacks linked to extremist groups operating in the Lake Chad region. The latest developments underscore the fragility of resettlement efforts across the state, as communities previously considered relatively stable continue to face renewed violence.
Security challenges in Borno have intensified in recent months, with a resurgence of attacks targeting both military formations and civilian populations. Analysts say such incidents are undermining ongoing reconstruction and resettlement programmes aimed at returning displaced persons to their ancestral homes.
The relocation also comes against the backdrop of broader insecurity in the region, where millions have been displaced over the years by insurgency activities. Authorities maintain that consolidating IDPs in more secure urban centres like Maiduguri is a temporary but necessary measure to prevent further casualties and humanitarian crises.
While the military has assured residents of sustained operations to reclaim and stabilise affected areas, concerns remain about the long-term viability of returning displaced populations to volatile communities without lasting security guarantees.
