NANS Issues Four-Day Deadline to South African Businesses, Cites Rising Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians

Posted on July 6, 2026July 6, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on NANS Issues Four-Day Deadline to South African Businesses, Cites Rising Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a four-day ultimatum to South African-owned businesses operating in Nigeria, urging them to wind down their operations and leave the country over the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

The students’ body said the directive followed what it described as the continued targeting, harassment and killing of Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa despite repeated diplomatic engagements between the two countries. According to NANS, the latest incidents have heightened fears among Nigerians living in the Southern African nation and require a firmer response.

NANS warned that failure by South African business interests to comply with the ultimatum could trigger nationwide protests and coordinated actions by Nigerian students. The association maintained that its position was intended to draw attention to the plight of Nigerians facing attacks abroad and to pressure South African authorities into taking decisive steps to protect foreign nationals.

The development comes amid escalating diplomatic tension over renewed anti-immigrant violence in parts of South Africa, which has forced many Nigerians to seek evacuation. The Federal Government has urged Nigerians who feel unsafe to take advantage of evacuation arrangements while also demanding justice for victims of the attacks and stronger protection for Nigerian citizens in South Africa.

Although NANS has adopted a confrontational stance, the Federal Government has appealed for calm and advised Nigerians not to retaliate against South African businesses or nationals in the country. Authorities insist that diplomatic channels remain the preferred avenue for resolving the crisis while efforts continue to ensure the safety and orderly return of affected Nigerians.
