Senate Summons NFF, NSC Over Nigeria’s World Cup Failures, as Football Crisis Deepens

Posted on August 20, 2026August 20, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Senate Summons NFF, NSC Over Nigeria’s World Cup Failures, as Football Crisis Deepens

Nigeria’s worsening football fortunes have triggered fresh intervention from the Senate, with the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) summoned to explain the country’s recent failures on the international stage.

The Senate Committee on Sports held an emergency meeting on Wednesday with NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau in Abuja. The session was chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi, who heads the committee.

The lawmakers’ concerns were largely linked to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The setbacks have intensified scrutiny of the country’s football administration.

Ningi disclosed that the meeting was convened at the instance of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who had expressed concern about the state of Nigerian sports, particularly football. According to the committee chairman, the Senate leadership wants answers on why the country’s football teams have continued to struggle despite government support.

The senator said the meeting also focused on the strained relationship between the NSC and NFF. Ningi urged both bodies to close ranks and work together, stressing that their differences should not be allowed to undermine the development and performance of Nigerian football.

The Senate is particularly concerned that the poor results have persisted despite increased government funding and other forms of support. Lawmakers pointed to financial incentives provided by President Bola Tinubu to players and officials, as well as increased funding for the sports sector.

The development comes after a series of concerns over the administration of Nigerian football. In July, the Senate sports committee had queried the NSC and NFF over their failure to honour previous invitations from lawmakers as part of an examination of issues affecting the sector.

Ningi said Wednesday’s meeting would contribute to a broader assessment of the state of Nigerian sports. He is expected to present a comprehensive briefing to the Senate when lawmakers resume next month, with recommendations on how to reverse the decline.

The senator, however, cautioned against calls for an immediate dissolution of the NFF. He stressed that any action taken by the National Assembly must comply with Nigerian law and the statutes of FIFA, highlighting the need for due process in addressing the crisis.

For Nigerian football, the Senate intervention comes at a critical moment. The failure of the Super Eagles to reach the 2026 World Cup and the Super Falcons’ absence from the 2027 Women’s World Cup have raised serious questions about the country’s football development and administration. The latest meeting signals that lawmakers are determined to demand accountability while seeking measures capable of restoring Nigeria’s competitiveness in international football.
