WhatsApp Business Users Face New Charges as Meta Ends Free Messaging in October

Posted on August 29, 2026August 29, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on WhatsApp Business Users Face New Charges as Meta Ends Free Messaging in October

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is set to introduce a new cost for businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform, with certain messages becoming chargeable from October 1, 2026. The move is expected to affect organisations that depend heavily on WhatsApp for customer support, transactions and other business communications.

The change specifically concerns the WhatsApp Business Platform, the service designed for businesses that communicate with customers at scale through software integrations, automation and customer-service systems. It should not be confused with the standard WhatsApp Business app commonly used by smaller businesses.

Under the revised arrangement, Meta will begin charging on a per-message basis for service messages sent by businesses. These are generally non-template responses sent through the platform when businesses interact with customers. Meta says the new billing approach will bring service messages in line with its existing per-message pricing structure.

A significant part of the change involves the 24-hour customer-service window. Meta currently allows certain service messages within an open customer-service window to be sent without a separate charge. From October 1, however, businesses will be billed for those service messages when they are delivered.

Utility messages sent in response to customers within the open 24-hour window will also become chargeable under the October pricing changes. Utility communications can include practical customer updates such as order confirmations, payment notifications and delivery information.

The development could have particular implications for Nigerian companies that use WhatsApp extensively to manage customer relationships. Banks, fintech companies, online retailers, telecommunications firms, logistics operators and other businesses with large customer bases are among the organisations that may need to review their messaging costs and strategies.

However, the new policy does not mean that ordinary WhatsApp users will suddenly have to pay to send or receive personal messages. Customers sending messages to businesses are not the ones being charged under this change; the fees apply to qualifying business-sent messages on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

Small businesses using the standalone WhatsApp Business application are also not the primary target of the new platform pricing. The distinction is important because WhatsApp offers both a free business app for smaller operators and the more sophisticated Business Platform used by larger organisations and companies requiring advanced integrations.

Meta’s changes are part of a broader evolution of the WhatsApp Business Platform’s pricing model. The company has increasingly moved toward message-based billing, replacing older conversation-based approaches and introducing separate pricing structures for different categories of business communication.

Businesses using third-party providers to access the WhatsApp Business Platform may also face costs beyond Meta’s own fees. Such providers can impose their own charges, meaning the total amount paid by a company could depend on both Meta’s pricing and the commercial terms of its technology or messaging provider.

With the October 1 deadline approaching, businesses that rely heavily on WhatsApp are expected to reassess their customer-communication workflows, consolidate unnecessary messages and examine their messaging volumes. The change marks another significant development in Meta’s monetisation of WhatsApp’s rapidly expanding business ecosystem and could push companies to become more deliberate about how they communicate with customers through the platform.
