Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved the appointment of former House of Representatives member Alhaji Mashood Mustapha as the Ameerul Hajj for the state’s 2027 Muslim pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
The appointment was announced in Ilorin on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in a statement issued by the governor’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Abdulrafiu Agboola. The announcement was also reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets.
According to the statement, Mustapha, popularly known as MM, will serve as the leader of Kwara’s contingent for the 2027 Hajj exercise and coordinate the pilgrimage programme in collaboration with relevant statutory bodies and government agencies at different levels.
The appointment gives the former federal lawmaker a coordinating role in preparations for the state’s participation in the annual Islamic pilgrimage. The Ameerul Hajj is expected to work with the appropriate institutions involved in organising and facilitating the pilgrimage.
Mustapha is described in the announcement as an entrepreneur, public servant and community leader. He is also identified as the Wakili of the Ilorin Emirate, a traditional title associated with his public and community engagements in Kwara.
Beyond his community activities, Mustapha has a political background at both state and federal levels. He previously served as a member of the Kwara State Government cabinet and later represented his constituency in the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015.
He is also the chairman of Crystal Group of Companies, according to the announcement. His educational background includes studies at Kwara State Polytechnic, Lagos State University and Rome Business School in Italy.
As Ameerul Hajj, Mustapha will be expected to coordinate with the various government and statutory institutions responsible for the 2027 pilgrimage. The governor’s statement did not announce additional details concerning the composition of the delegation or specific arrangements for the exercise.
The appointment comes as preparations for the 2027 Hajj begin to take shape across Nigeria, with state governments expected to work with the relevant pilgrimage authorities on arrangements for intending pilgrims.
For Kwara, the appointment places the responsibility for leading and coordinating the state’s contingent on Mustapha ahead of the pilgrimage. His role will involve working alongside the institutions and officials responsible for the state’s Hajj operations.
The announcement marks another public responsibility for the former federal lawmaker and business executive, who combines previous legislative experience with community and private-sector engagements. The 2027 Hajj exercise will subsequently provide the framework within which he carries out his new assignment.
