Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally resigned from his position in the Federal Executive Council to pursue his long-standing ambition of becoming governor of Oyo State.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu confirmed that his exit will take effect on April 30, 2026, allowing time for a structured transition and handover of responsibilities.
The former minister described his decision as both necessary and strategic, noting that it aligns with provisions of the amended electoral law, which restricts political office holders from contesting elections while still in office.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to the president for the opportunity to serve, stating that his tenure in the power sector was marked by efforts to advance reforms critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and industrial development. He emphasized that stepping down would allow him to fully concentrate on his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State.
His governorship aspiration is not new. Adelabu had previously resigned as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018 to contest the Oyo governorship election, underscoring a sustained political interest in leading the state.
Before his resignation, Adelabu had reportedly briefed the president on key achievements in the power sector, including policy frameworks such as the National Integrated Electricity Policy and long-term resource planning initiatives aimed at stabilising electricity supply.
His exit marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle, particularly in Oyo State, where his anticipated candidacy is expected to shape the dynamics of the governorship race.
Adelabu, who was appointed Minister of Power in August 2023, is now set to return fully to partisan politics as preparations intensify for upcoming elections.
