The Chairman of the Rivers State House committee on Emergency relief and Special duties, representing Oyigbo constituency has called out to the people of Rivers State to be vigilant as the season of rains draw nearer.
Honorable Promise Nwankwo made the call to the people at the state House of Assembly complex when Rextun City Updates cornered him to respond to some raging issues in the state.
He observed that “the perennial issue of flooding has become worrisome, hence the need to sensitize our citizen to mitigation measures which will reduce the loss of homes and properties that have become seasonal occurrences.”
The law maker listed a number of measures the people should adopt in preparation for the coming rainy season. He reiterated the expediency of keeping the drains and water ways cleared of debris around all our settlements. According to him, ” reports of studies have shown that unhindered and uncluttered water ways allows for easy run off of water during the season.”
He seized the opportunity to also call on developers to avoid building across known natural waterways.
When asked further, what are some measures the state government has put in place to ensure we do not witness the usual loss of homes and properties to flooding this year, honorable Nwakwo stated that ” Rivers State under Governor Nyesom Wike has the most responsive and efficient emergency relief system in place. And although we do not pray for emergencies, but our dynamic governor, the Barrister Wike in his usual manner has made sure we are ready at all times to prevent all preventable loss of homes and properties of our people to water flooding. That is why we are also imploring our people to play their parts by refraining from environmental infarctions that can result in flooding “.
