The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the annual observance marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani. The holiday will apply nationwide as Muslims observe the religious occasion.
The Federal Government congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, while encouraging citizens to use the occasion for reflection rather than treating it solely as a period of celebration.
Tunji-Ojo said Eid ul Mawlid provides an opportunity for Nigerians to consider the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to humanity.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said. He added that these qualities are particularly important to Nigeria at the present time.
The minister encouraged all Nigerians, irrespective of religious affiliation, to reflect on these values and apply them in their relationships with one another. He also called for greater tolerance and peaceful coexistence among citizens and communities.
Beyond the religious significance of the occasion, the government urged Nigerians to use the holiday as an opportunity to pray for peace, security and national cohesion. Tunji-Ojo stressed that building and preserving national unity is a responsibility shared by all citizens.
The government also appealed to Muslims to celebrate responsibly and with mutual respect. The minister wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid while reaffirming the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the country.
Eid ul Mawlid is observed by many Muslims around the world in remembrance of the birth of Prophet Muhammad. In Nigeria, the occasion is traditionally marked through prayers, religious gatherings, lectures and other forms of communal observance.
With the declaration, Nigerians will have a nationwide public holiday on Tuesday, August 25. The date is listed as the 2026 Eid ul Mawlid public holiday in Nigeria.
The Federal Government’s message places particular emphasis on using the occasion to strengthen peaceful relations and national solidarity, urging citizens to draw practical lessons from the values of compassion, humility and service associated with the commemoration.
