The Kwara State Police Command has ordered the immediate and strict enforcement of existing traffic laws and regulations across the state, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, amid concerns over what the Command described as increasing disregard for traffic regulations and road safety measures among some motorists and other road users.
According to the Command, violations of traffic rules have contributed to avoidable road crashes, traffic congestion, obstruction of vehicular movement and situations that unnecessarily expose motorists, passengers, pedestrians and other members of the public to danger.
The Police said the statewide enforcement exercise is intended to restore order on the roads, improve compliance with traffic regulations, protect lives and property, and promote a safer and more orderly transportation system across Kwara.
The Command stressed that the operation is not designed to create unnecessary hardship for law-abiding residents. Rather, it said the objective is to encourage responsible road use and strengthen respect for traffic regulations and the rule of law.
CP Adekimi directed officers participating in the exercise to conduct themselves professionally while enforcing the regulations. Personnel were also instructed to respect the rights and dignity of members of the public in the course of their duties.
The Commissioner further warned that police officers who violate traffic regulations or engage in misconduct during the enforcement exercise will face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the laws and regulations governing the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command urged motorists, commercial vehicle operators, tricycle and motorcycle riders, as well as other road users, to obey traffic signs, observe stipulated speed limits and avoid dangerous driving practices.
Road users were also advised to ensure that their vehicle documents remain valid and to refrain from actions that could obstruct traffic or place other people at risk. The Police appealed for the cooperation and support of residents as the enforcement exercise gets underway.
The Kwara State Police Command said it remains committed to promoting safer roads, protecting lives and property, and creating a secure environment in which responsible road use is treated as a shared responsibility among all residents.
