The Kwara State Police Command has commenced a statewide traffic enforcement operation aimed at ensuring strict compliance with road safety regulations and protecting the lives and property of motorists and other road users.
The initiative, tagged Operation VELVET, began on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, PSC, MNIPS, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM.
The Command described Operation VELVET as a continuous enforcement initiative designed to promote responsible driving, improve road safety and ensure that motorists comply with existing traffic laws across Kwara State.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the operation will focus on ensuring that motorists obey traffic regulations and that vehicles operating on public roads have valid and legally required documentation.
The police specifically advised vehicle owners and motorists to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and that all relevant documents are valid and available before embarking on journeys.
The Command warned that motorists found violating traffic regulations or operating vehicles without the required legal documentation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with existing laws and due process.
The police said the operation is not a one-off exercise, stressing that Operation VELVET will continue as part of efforts to strengthen traffic-law enforcement and improve safety on roads throughout the state.
The Commissioner of Police urged motorists and other road users to cooperate with police personnel deployed for the exercise and to comply with traffic regulations at all times.
He also called on motorists to adopt responsible driving practices, noting that road users have a shared responsibility to help prevent avoidable crashes and protect lives and property.
The Command assured residents that the enforcement exercise would be conducted within the framework of the law, while reiterating its commitment to maintaining safer roads, peace and public order across Kwara State.
The police therefore urged motorists to put their vehicle documentation in order and observe all traffic regulations as the statewide Operation VELVET gets underway.
