The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun’s successor, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has announced a major security restructuring aimed at strengthening policing and curbing criminal activities across Nigeria.
As part of the new strategy, the IGP has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to the country’s six geopolitical zones to enhance operational oversight, coordination, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
The directive was unveiled during the Monthly Strategic Conference with senior police officers held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja. According to the police leadership, the deployment will take effect from June 15, 2026, and is expected to bring senior command closer to field operations while improving response to emerging security challenges.
In addition to the deployment of DIGs, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police across the country to commence coordinated inter-state security operations known as “Handshake Patrols.” The initiative is designed to improve collaboration among neighboring state commands and tackle crimes that often transcend state boundaries, including kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and other organized criminal activities.
Police authorities said the inter-state patrol framework would facilitate intelligence sharing, coordinated operations, and rapid response mechanisms among adjoining commands, thereby closing operational gaps often exploited by criminal elements. The strategy is expected to strengthen law enforcement presence along major transit routes and border communities.
The latest move comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in several parts of the country and follows renewed calls for more proactive security measures. By decentralizing senior police supervision and encouraging cross-border collaboration among commands, the Force hopes to improve crime prevention, enhance public safety, and boost confidence in policing nationwide.
Security analysts view the initiative as a significant step toward improving operational effectiveness, particularly in addressing crimes that require coordinated action across multiple jurisdictions.
The Nigeria Police Force has expressed confidence that the combined deployment of DIGs and the launch of the Handshake Patrols will strengthen security architecture and contribute to ongoing efforts to protect lives and property across the federation.
