The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that it will commence a two-week warning strike from Monday, October 13, 2025, after its 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government expired.
Earlier this month, ASUU issued a 14-day ultimatum calling on the government to urgently address a range of long-standing issues affecting public universities. Those demands include full implementation of the 2009 ASUU–FGN Agreement, improved funding for federal universities, reversal of unpaid allowances, and better working conditions for academic staff.
In the last days before the ultimatum’s expiration, the government maintained that negotiations were in their “final phase.” The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, claimed that the government had already released ₦50 billion in earned academic allowances and that ₦150 billion had been included in the 2025 budget for “needs assessment” in tertiary institutions. These funds, he said, would be disbursed in tranches.
Despite these pronouncements, ASUU leaders rejected government statements as inadequate and accused the government of delaying meaningful action.

ASUU has mobilized its chapters nationwide in preparation for the forthcoming strike, emphasizing that unless “something substantial” is delivered, the action will proceed. The union has also hinted that following the two-week warning period, it might consider a more prolonged or indefinite strike if its demands remain unmet.
Within the academic community, concerns are mounting about what further disruption could do to Nigeria’s already fragile university calendar. In recent months, ASUU chapters have sounded alarms over a steady “brain drain”, reportedly over 309 professors have left Nigeria’s public universities within the last nine months in search of better opportunities abroad, according to ASUU’s Zonal Chairman in the north. Critics say repeated strikes have hampered student progression, delayed graduations, and eroded public trust in tertiary education.
Student disruption: The warning strike will likely disrupt lectures, examinations, and administrative services across federal universities.
Negotiation urgency: The government has a narrow window to propose concrete measures to head off the strike.
ASUU will closely monitor whether promises translate into action, and may abandon restraint if the government fails to deliver.
If no breakthrough is achieved by the end of the two weeks, the union may escalate to an indefinite strike.
As of now, no public statement has emerged indicating a last-minute truce or postponement. The eyes of students, parents, and educational stakeholders across Nigeria will be on the government’s next move, and whether it can bridge the longstanding gulf of trust with ASUU.
