$2.5m Scam: Nigerian Socialite Poses as Dubai Crown Prince

Posted on February 4, 2026February 4, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on $2.5m Scam: Nigerian Socialite Poses as Dubai Crown Prince

A Nigerian socialite, Nzube Henry Ikeji, has been accused of impersonating the Crown Prince of Dubai in an elaborate romance and investment scam that allegedly defrauded a Romanian businesswoman of $2.5 million, according to an investigation by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

The case was detailed in an OCCRP documentary which revealed how the fraud began about three years ago when the victim, identified only as Laura, was contacted on LinkedIn by an account claiming to belong to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the real Crown Prince of Dubai.

Investigators said the impostor initially presented himself as a philanthropist interested in humanitarian and development projects in Eastern Europe, a pitch that aligned with Laura’s professional background and helped establish early trust between both parties.

Over time, the relationship allegedly moved beyond professional discussions into a personal and romantic exchange, with the fake Dubai prince expressing emotional attachment and even proposing marriage, further deepening the victim’s confidence in the interaction.

The scheme reportedly escalated when Laura was introduced to a supposed financial manager in London, identified as Matthew Cros, who investigators later said was an alias used by another suspect, Dr Martins Abhulimhen, believed to be part of the fraud network.

Laura was shown what appeared to be a legitimate bank account containing about £202 million, which she was told had been placed in her name to fund joint investments and humanitarian projects. OCCRP investigators later found the account and its documents to be digitally fabricated.

When Laura attempted to access the funds, she was allegedly told to pay various fees for account activation, taxes and transaction clearance, a process that investigators say was deliberately designed to extract continuous payments from her.

According to the report, the requested payments began modestly but steadily increased in size, eventually amounting to more than $2.5 million, transferred across multiple accounts linked to the alleged conspirators.

The fraud reportedly began to unravel after internal disagreements emerged among the suspects over the sharing of the proceeds. One of the individuals involved allegedly contacted Laura and disclosed that the supposed Dubai Crown Prince was in fact a Nigerian socialite.

Using digital trails and social media posts displaying a lavish lifestyle, OCCRP reporters traced Nzube Henry Ikeji to a high-end residence in Abuja, Nigeria, where he was later confronted by journalists. Ikeji reportedly denied the allegations and referred all inquiries to his legal representatives.

British law enforcement authorities, including the London Metropolitan Police, were said to have tracked parts of the money trail through the United Kingdom before it was allegedly transferred to accounts connected to Nigeria.

As of the time of the OCCRP report, no formal charges had been announced against Ikeji or Abhulimhen, and investigations into the alleged fraud are ongoing across multiple jurisdictions.

The case has renewed global attention on the growing sophistication of online romance and investment scams, particularly those exploiting professional networking platforms and high-profile impersonations to deceive victims over long periods.
