FG Reaffirms Commitment to Complete Abuja–Kaduna Highway End of April

Posted on March 4, 2026March 4, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on FG Reaffirms Commitment to Complete Abuja–Kaduna Highway End of April

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to completing the long‑delayed Abuja–Kaduna highway by the end of April 2026, describing the project as a strategic priority for national transportation and economic connectivity.

Officials from the Federal Ministry of Works disclosed the update during an inspection tour of the reconstruction project on Tuesday. According to the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed, the highway links the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with the North‑Central and northern regions, serving as a vital corridor for trade and travel across Nigeria.

The project, originally awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, was re‑awarded to Infouest Nigeria Limited after contractual disagreements over cost and timelines. Work on the expressway includes major redesigns, such as replacing traditional asphalt surfacing with Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) to improve durability and reduce long‑term maintenance needs.

During the tour, the engineer’s representative, Chukwuma Kalu, said about 60 kilometres of the 81‑kilometre CRCP section had already been completed. An additional 17.3‑kilometre asphalt section on the Kano–Zaria road and a 6.63‑kilometre dual asphalt overlay in Kano State have also been delivered, with the asphalt section around 80 % complete. This leaves approximately 21 kilometres of the project remaining ahead of the expected April deadline.

“Kalu stated that construction activities are ongoing day and night to meet the deadline,” reported the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Contractors and ministry officials confirmed their resolve to finish the outstanding work before the end of April.

The commitment to the project forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic growth and improved national connectivity. Officials also highlighted parallel road interventions in other regions as part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s transport network.

Completion of the Abuja–Kaduna highway is expected to ease travel, reduce vehicle operating costs, and boost commerce between the northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.
