In a significant decision ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has appointed Francis Uzoho as the new first‑choice goalkeeper for the senior national team.
The move comes as Stanley Nwabali, who has long been Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, remains inactive at club level following the termination of his contract with South African side Chippa United.
Uzoho, who previously served as the backup to Nwabali during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations where the Super Eagles finished third, has now been handed the responsibility of leading the team’s goalkeeping department.
The 25‑year‑old shot‑stopper returns to prominence at a time when the team prepares to resume competitive action later this month. Uzoho’s experience with the national team, combined with his calm presence between the sticks, reportedly influenced Chelle’s decision to make him the first choice.
Chelle’s choice also reflects broader developments within Nigeria’s goalkeeping pool. Forward‑looking alternatives such as Arthur Okonkwo, the goalkeeper recently approved to represent Nigeria after switching from England could provide additional competition, though he must wait for final international eligibility clearance before featuring in competitive matches.
Meanwhile, Maduka Okoye, the Udinese goalkeeper who previously rejected an AFCON call‑up after being told he would not start, remains out of favour.
This reshuffle marks a new chapter for the Super Eagles’ defensive setup, with Uzoho now tasked with anchoring the team’s quest for success in upcoming qualifiers and friendlies.
