Kebbi Judge Freed After Eight Days in Captivity as Family Reveals N50m Ransom Payment

Posted on August 4, 2026August 4, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Kebbi Judge Freed After Eight Days in Captivity as Family Reveals N50m Ransom Payment

The release of Justice Faruk Hassan Bunza, a judge of the Kebbi State High Court, has brought relief to his family, colleagues and the wider legal community. But the circumstances surrounding his freedom have also reopened difficult questions about Nigeria’s continuing struggle with kidnapping and the growing financial incentives behind abductions.

Justice Bunza was abducted in the early hours of Sunday, July 26, 2026, when armed men invaded his residence in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Reports indicate that the judge had returned from a trip to Sokoto shortly before the attackers struck. He was subsequently taken away from his home and held for more than a week.

His release was confirmed on Monday, August 3, with police and family sources saying the judge had returned home safely. At the time, the Kebbi State Police Command said the kidnappers had demanded ransom but maintained that no ransom was paid to secure his release. The police also said investigations were being intensified to identify and apprehend those responsible.

That account has now been complicated by a disclosure from the judge’s family.

Family confirms ₦50 million payment

The family has confirmed that approximately ₦50 million was paid to the abductors to secure Justice Bunza’s freedom.

According to family sources, the kidnappers initially demanded ₦200 million, but negotiations eventually brought the amount down to ₦50 million. A family member said the money was delivered after negotiations lasting several days.

Other reports indicate that family representatives were directed to a remote location where the ransom was handed over. One relative also said the kidnappers requested five bottles of malt drink and five packs of fruit juice during the process.

The judge was subsequently released and returned home.

The conflicting accounts over whether ransom was paid are significant. They demonstrate the difficulty of obtaining a complete and immediate picture of kidnapping incidents, particularly where families may be reluctant to disclose negotiations while a victim remains in captivity.

Eight days that shook the legal community

The abduction was particularly disturbing because the victim was not simply a private citizen but a serving judicial officer.

Judges occupy a sensitive position in the administration of justice. They preside over disputes, criminal proceedings and other matters in which the liberty, property and rights of individuals are at stake.

The kidnapping of a judge therefore carries implications beyond the trauma suffered by one individual and his family.

It raises concerns about the security of judicial officers, the vulnerability of court personnel and the potential consequences for public confidence in the justice system.

If judicial officers begin to perceive themselves as easy targets, the psychological impact could extend into the administration of justice itself.

The ransom economy

The ₦50 million payment also illustrates one of the most troubling characteristics of Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis: abduction has become a business model for criminal groups.

The initial ₦200 million demand reportedly placed an enormous financial value on the judge’s life. Although negotiations reduced the eventual payment to a quarter of the original demand, ₦50 million remains a substantial sum for an ordinary Nigerian family.

The incident therefore raises an uncomfortable question: when kidnappers successfully obtain millions of naira from victims’ families, what prevents other criminal groups from viewing kidnapping as a profitable enterprise?

Every successful ransom transaction potentially reinforces the economic incentive behind future abductions.

This creates an agonising dilemma for families. When a loved one is in captivity, the immediate priority is naturally to bring that person home alive. Families may consequently make extraordinary sacrifices to secure a release, even when doing so conflicts with broader efforts to deprive kidnappers of financial rewards.

A troubling contradiction

The difference between the police account and the family’s subsequent disclosure deserves careful attention.

When Justice Bunza was released, police spokesman Bashir Usman said the kidnappers had demanded ransom but maintained that no money had been paid. The family has now said the opposite, confirming a ₦50 million payment.

This does not necessarily establish that either side deliberately misled the public. Security agencies may sometimes withhold sensitive information while investigations are ongoing, while families may initially keep ransom negotiations confidential for security reasons.

Nevertheless, the discrepancy highlights the importance of accurate public communication during major security incidents.

When an abducted judge is involved, Nigerians deserve a clear account of what happened, subject of course to legitimate operational and investigative considerations.

Why the incident matters beyond Kebbi

Justice Bunza’s ordeal should not be treated merely as another kidnapping story.

Nigeria has experienced repeated attacks on civilians, community leaders, students, religious figures and public officials. The abduction of a serving judge adds another layer to the country’s security challenge.

The judiciary depends on the physical security and independence of its personnel. A judicial officer who must worry about being abducted from home is operating in an environment where the reach of criminal networks has become deeply concerning.

The episode should therefore prompt a review of security arrangements for judges and other judicial personnel, particularly in areas where kidnapping remains a persistent threat.

Security planning should not begin only after an incident occurs.

The uncomfortable lesson

There is also a broader lesson for government.

A policy that merely condemns kidnapping after each incident is unlikely to solve the problem. The more fundamental task is to make kidnapping progressively less profitable and more difficult to organise.

That requires effective intelligence gathering, rapid response capability, prosecution of suspected kidnappers and, critically, disruption of the financial networks that sustain organised abduction.

But enforcement alone is not enough.

The persistence of kidnapping is also connected to wider socioeconomic problems, including unemployment, weak local economies, porous rural environments and the difficulty of maintaining effective security coverage across large territories.

The solution therefore has to combine security operations with stronger institutions, economic opportunity and community-level intelligence.

Relief, but not resolution

For the Bunza family, the most important fact is that Justice Faruk Hassan Bunza is alive and back home.

Reports say he is receiving care at home and recovering from the ordeal. The family has indicated that the judge may speak publicly when he is sufficiently recovered.

That recovery should be respected.

But his safe return should not obscure the disturbing circumstances that made it necessary for a family to reportedly raise ₦50 million to secure the freedom of a serving judge.

The incident is a reminder that Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis is not confined to remote communities or economically vulnerable households. Even people occupying prominent positions within the institutions of the state can become targets.

And that is perhaps the most sobering message from the Bunza case.

When the criminals can abduct a judge from his home, demand hundreds of millions of naira and ultimately collect tens of millions before releasing him, the problem is no longer simply about individual security.

It is about the resilience of the Nigerian state against a criminal economy that continues to place a price on human freedom.

Justice Bunza is home.

The larger question is whether Nigeria can make sure that the next victim does not have to be bought back from captivity.
