Maiduguri Bombings: Ndume Reveals Insurgents Used Tricycles to Move Explosives in Coordinated Attacks

Posted on March 20, 2026March 20, 2026 By Rextun boss No Comments on Maiduguri Bombings: Ndume Reveals Insurgents Used Tricycles to Move Explosives in Coordinated Attacks

Fresh details have emerged on the deadly bomb attacks that rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, with Senator Ali Ndume disclosing that explosives used in the incident were transported using commercial tricycles, popularly known as Keke NAPEP.

Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, raised the alarm while speaking on national television, describing the tactic as part of evolving insurgent strategies in the region. According to him, attackers leveraged the everyday mobility of tricycles to move bombs undetected before deploying them at target locations.

The senator explained that the insurgents often rely on a “hit-and-run” approach, supported by local intelligence networks. He warned that informants within communities continue to aid such operations, complicating security efforts.

The revelation follows coordinated bomb explosions that struck multiple locations in Maiduguri on March 16, 2026. The attacks hit a busy market, the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover, areas typically crowded with civilians.

Official reports indicate that at least 23 people were killed and 108 others injured in the blasts, which occurred in quick succession during the evening hours.

Security agencies have linked the attacks to suspected suicide bombers, with analysts pointing to extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), both of which have a history of orchestrating similar assaults in the region.

The incident underscores renewed security concerns in northeastern Nigeria, particularly in Maiduguri, long regarded as the epicentre of insurgency but which had experienced relative calm in recent years before this resurgence of violence.

Authorities have since intensified security measures across the city, while investigations continue into the attackers’ methods, logistics, and possible collaborators within local communities.
