In a pulsating Premier League encounter at St James’ Park on Sunday, Arsenal overturned a 1-0 deficit to beat Newcastle United 2-1, clinching a dramatic winner through Gabriel Magalhães in the 96th minute.
The match began with controversy when referee Jarred Gillett awarded Arsenal a penalty after what seemed a foul by Nick Pope on Viktor Gyokeres. But after reviewing via VAR, the decision was overturned.
Replays showed Pope had made slight contact with the ball before colliding with the attacker.
In the 34th minute, Nick Woltemade gave Newcastle the lead. The goal came from a well-executed corner routine. Sandro Tonali played a short corner before delivering a cross, which Woltemade headed in.
Arsenal appealed for a foul on Gabriel, but VAR deemed contact minimal and allowed the goal to stand.
Before that, Arsenal had protested that Nick Pope made several strong saves, including a hard challenge on Eberechi Eze and turning a header from Jurrien Timber around the post.
At halftime, Arsenal made changes, substituting Cristhian Mosquera for William Saliba to tighten the defence.
As the match progressed, Arsenal began to exert more pressure. But Newcastle held firm, even after losing full-back Livramento to injury late in the game.
The breakthrough came in the 84th minute.
From a short corner, Declan Rice whipped in a cross that Mikel Merino headed in leveling the contest.
Six minutes into stoppage time, Arsenal struck again. Martin Ødegaard delivered a corner and Gabriel Magalhães powered a header past Pope to complete the comeback.
This goal, timed around 95:45 mins, is one of Arsenal’s latest winners in a Premier League away match in recent years.
The win lifted Arsenal to second in the table with 13 points from six matches, closing the gap to Liverpool to just two points.
Newcastle remain in 15th, still on six points after six games.
Meanwhile, Captain Bukayo Saka criticized the VAR decision that overturned the first-half penalty, arguing that the delay showed the call was not a “clear and obvious error.”
