Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully foiled a terrorist attack on an Easter church service in Kaduna State, rescuing 31 abducted worshippers in a swift counter-operation.
The incident occurred in Ariko Village, located in Kachia Local Government Area, where armed assailants stormed a church during Easter celebrations and abducted congregants. Security sources confirmed that the attack targeted worshippers gathered for service at an ECWA church in the community.
According to military authorities, troops responded promptly after receiving a distress call from residents. Working in coordination with members of the local community, soldiers pursued the fleeing attackers into nearby areas, leading to a confrontation.
During the operation, troops engaged the gunmen in a fierce firefight and overpowered them with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to abandon the victims. All 31 abducted worshippers were successfully rescued in the process.
However, the attack recorded casualties before the military intervention. Officials confirmed that at least five victims were killed by the assailants, with their bodies recovered at the scene.
One of the rescued victims was reported injured and is currently receiving medical attention, while others are believed to be safe following the rescue operation.
The Nigerian Army noted that the fleeing attackers likely sustained significant losses, as blood trails were observed along their escape routes. Troops have since intensified pursuit operations to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks in the area.
The latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups have continued to target rural communities and religious gatherings, often carrying out kidnappings for ransom and violent raids.
Authorities have reassured residents of continued military presence and urged the public to provide timely and credible intelligence to support ongoing security operations.
