Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all its affiliate unions to begin urgent mobilisation ahead of a possible nationwide industrial action against the Dangote Group.
The labour body accused the conglomerate of sustained anti-worker practices, including union-busting, low wages, and refusal to recognise collective bargaining rights.
NUPENG, one of NLC’s strongest affiliates, had earlier declared an indefinite strike, accusing Dangote of preventing refinery workers and drivers from joining unions.
Following government intervention, an MoU was signed on September 9, compelling Dangote to allow unionisation of its refinery and petrochemical staff within two weeks.
While the strike was suspended, the NLC says it is keeping all workers “on red alert” until the company fully complies with labour laws and ILO conventions.
The outcome of this standoff is expected to set a precedent for labour relations in Nigeria’s private sector.
