The Nigeria Police Force has reportedly arrested two suspects, including the alleged sender of a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition connected to the controversial killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman in Effurun, Delta State.
The latest arrests are part of ongoing investigations into the April 26 incident that sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria after videos surfaced online showing Ogidi being shot at close range while restrained by police operatives in Effurun.
According to reports, the two suspects were brought into the Effurun Area Command of the Delta State Police Command on Wednesday night. Sources familiar with the investigation said one of the arrested persons is believed to be the individual who allegedly sent the firearm from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, through a transport company to Effurun.
The weapon was reportedly intended for delivery to an owner in Sapele. Investigators are also trying to determine whether the second suspect arrested was the commercial driver involved in transporting the parcel from Yenagoa to Delta State.
Police authorities have yet to officially release the identities of the suspects or provide a formal statement on the arrests. However, sources quoted in multiple reports said the operation forms part of efforts to uncover everyone linked to the movement of the firearm and the circumstances surrounding Ogidi’s death.
Ogidi, popularly known as “Mine” among friends, was reportedly apprehended at the Effurun Motor Park after the parcel he was attempting to waybill allegedly contained the pistol and ammunition. Witnesses and police accounts indicated that he had already been restrained and was unarmed when ASP Nuhu Usman allegedly shot him, an act that triggered national condemnation.
Following internal disciplinary proceedings, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the dismissal and prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman alongside other officers implicated in the incident. The police hierarchy described the killing as a gross violation of Force Order 237 and existing rules governing the use of firearms.
The Nigeria Police Force has also assured the public that all persons connected to the firearm shipment and the fatal shooting will be brought to justice as investigations continue.
